Deliciously crispy Baked Blooming Onions are a perfect appetizer that combines sweet onions, a crunchy coating, and a burst of flavor with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Large Onions (sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 tablespoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 cup Bread Crumbs (preferably panko)
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese (grated, optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and trim the onions, cutting tops and bottoms slightly for stability.
  2. Set the onions root-side down and carefully cut downward in a star shape, making about 12 cuts without slicing all the way through.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Brush each onion with olive oil to ensure a crisp texture.
  5. Dredge the onions with the flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Sprinkle the breadcrumb and Parmesan cheese mixture over the coated onions.
  8. Bake for about 30 minutes or until tender and golden brown.

Notes

Serve with dips like ranch or aioli for added flavor. Consider letting the onions soak in additional flavors before prepping for a richer taste.
