Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 400 grams Firm tofu A plant-based protein that absorbs flavors beautifully.
  • 4 tablespoons Honey For a vegan option, substitute with maple syrup.
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced A fragrant element that elevates the dish.
  • 3 tablespoons Soy sauce Gives the dish a salty, umami kick.
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch Ensures that the tofu gets extra crispy.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame oil Provides a nutty flavor that complements the dish.
  • 2 Green onions, chopped For fresh crunch and color.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame seeds For garnish and added texture.
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil Essential for achieving that golden, crispy exterior.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by draining the firm tofu and wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object on top and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  • Once pressed, slice the tofu into uniform bite-sized cubes to ensure they cook evenly.

Making the Sauce

  • In a small bowl, combine the honey (or maple syrup), minced garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Whisk together to create a delicious honey garlic sauce.

Coating and Frying

  • In another bowl, place the cornstarch and toss each tofu cube in it until evenly coated.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the coated tofu cubes for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the skillet and drain excess oil on a paper towel-lined plate.

Combining Tofu and Sauce

  • Return the skillet to medium heat, pour in the honey garlic sauce, and let it simmer for about a minute until it thickens slightly.
  • Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet and gently toss to ensure each piece is well-coated with the sauce.

Notes

To achieve maximum crispiness, ensure the tofu is well-pressed and coated evenly with cornstarch. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for spiciness, or include chopped bell peppers or broccoli while frying for more crunch.
