Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats Chewy and hearty oats that provide a wonderful base.
  • 1.5 cups milk (or any plant-based milk) Creamy and rich, this will give the dish its custard-like texture.
  • 1 large egg Adds richness and helps bind the mixture.
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup Natural sweetness to enhance the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract A hint of warmth and aromatic bliss.
  • a pinch salt Balances the sweetness and elevates flavors.

Toppings

  • 1/2 cup fresh berries Juicy and colorful toppings for a burst of flavor.
  • 1 medium sliced banana For added creaminess and natural sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts Crunchy elements that complement the softness of the oats.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, combine 1 ½ cups of milk, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling.
  • While the milk mixture is warming, take a bowl and whisk 1 egg until it is well beaten.
  • Once the milk is warm, slowly pour it into the egg while whisking constantly to ensure a smooth custard without scrambling the egg.
  • Add 1 cup of rolled oats to the mixture and stir well. Cook on low heat, stirring frequently, until the oatmeal thickens into a creamy custard-like texture, which usually takes about 5-7 minutes.

Serving

  • Once thickened, divide the oatmeal into bowls. Top generously with fresh berries, sliced bananas, and chopped nuts for additional flavor and texture.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. You can experiment with various toppings and flavors to suit your taste. For a vegan version, replace the egg with flaxseed meal mixed with water.
