Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Provides a soft and fluffy texture.
  • 1 tsp salt Enhances the flavor.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Activates the flour.
  • 3 tbsp olive oil Adds richness, or use melted butter.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Aromatic addition.
  • 1 tsp dried herbs Substitute with oregano, rosemary, or thyme.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Adds a kick of warmth.
  • pinch of sugar Encourages browning.
  • a little oil or butter for the pan Ensures golden finish.
  • extra flour for dusting Prevents sticking.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt, alongside any optional seasonings. Create a well in the center, pouring in warm water and olive oil. Stir with a fork until it begins to come together and then knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until it forms a soft ball.
  • Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest for 10-15 minutes to hydrate the flour and relax the gluten.
  • Once rested, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces (or 6 for larger flatbreads) and roll each into a ball, covering them with a damp towel.

Cooking

  • On a floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter. Keep the surface dusted with flour to prevent sticking.
  • Heat a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of oil or butter.
  • Cook each flatbread for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown and puffed slightly. If they darken too quickly, reduce the heat. Stack the cooked flatbreads and cover them with a clean towel to keep warm.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with flavors by adding different spices, using fresh herbs instead of dried ones, or adjusting the dough consistency with extra flour as needed.
