Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen These flaky layers form the base of our delightful tree.
  • 1/2 cup Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread This creamy filling adds a rich chocolate flavor that pairs perfectly with the pastry.
  • 1 egg egg Used for the egg wash, giving the pastry a shiny, golden finish.
  • 1 tablespoon milk Combined with the egg to create the wash needed for that appetizing glaze.
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional) A little sprinkle adds a festive touch to your finished creation.
  • Star-shaped cookie cutter (optional, for tree topper) This little touch will make your puff pastry tree truly special!

Instructions

Preparation

  • Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Place one sheet of puff pastry on the prepared baking sheet. If needed, gently roll it out to achieve an even shape and size.
  • Warm the Nutella in the microwave for 10–15 seconds to soften it for easier spreading. Spread it evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Place the second sheet of puff pastry directly on top of the Nutella-covered sheet and lightly press down to seal the edges.
  • Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the stacked pastry into a large triangle, trimming away any excess pastry. Reserve these trimmings for creating the trunk or additional decorations.
  • On both sides of the triangle, cut horizontal strips about 1 inch apart, stopping just before you reach the center line. Gently twist each strip several times to form the branches of your tree.
  • From the pastry scraps, cut a small rectangle and attach it to the base of the triangle to serve as the trunk. If you're feeling festive, use a cookie cutter to create a star from the remaining scraps and place it at the top of your pastry tree.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush this mixture over the entire pastry to give it a beautiful, golden, shiny finish once baked.
  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Optionally, rotate the pan halfway through baking for even browning.
  • Allow the Nutella Christmas Tree Puff Pastry to cool slightly. Just before serving, dust with powdered sugar to add a festive finish!

Notes

Consider refrigerating the assembled pastry for about 15 minutes before baking for an even flakier texture. Serve with hot chocolate or spiced apple cider for a delightful pairing.
