Instructions

Dough Preparation

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Allow it to stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • Incorporate the olive oil into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour and salt until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, kneading for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil, place the dough inside, and turn to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm environment for 1-1.5 hours.

Topping Preparation

  • In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it into pieces until browned.
  • Add sliced red onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Then add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Remove from heat.

Pizza Assembly

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) with a pizza stone or baking steel.
  • Roll out the dough to form a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment or a pizza peel dusted with cornmeal.
