Ingredients

For the filling

  • 4 cups sliced strawberries Fresh and juicy, the star of the Danish.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch To thicken the strawberry filling.

  • 8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature Provides a rich flavor and smooth texture.
  • ½ cup powdered sugar Sweetens the cream cheese filling.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds warmth and depth to the flavor.

For the pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed Creates the flaky crust.
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten with 1 teaspoon water Egg wash for a golden finish.
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons sugar for topping Optional, adds crunchy sweetness.
  • ¼ cup strawberry jam Optional for topping, enhances strawberry flavor.

For the glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar For drizzling on top.
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the glaze's flavor.
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons milk To achieve the perfect glaze consistency.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Toss the sliced strawberries with cornstarch and sugar in a mixing bowl. Set aside to release juices.
  • Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in another bowl until smooth and creamy.
  • Cut thawed puff pastry sheets into squares, approximately 4 inches by 4 inches.

Assembly

  • Spread a generous spoonful of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each pastry square and top with prepared strawberries.
  • Fold edges of pastry squares over the filling and pinch to seal. Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle sugar on top.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Glazing and Serving

  • While pastries are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  • Once baked, allow the Danish to cool slightly before drizzling with glaze. Serve warm.

Notes

For a tangy contrast, add fresh lemon juice to strawberries. Substitute cream cheese with mascarpone or non-dairy alternatives if desired.
