Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk Helps create a soft texture.
  • 2 1/4 tsp dry active yeast Freshly activated for a perfect rise.
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar, divided Enhances overall flavor.
  • 1 large egg Adds richness.
  • 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt Balances flavors.
  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted, divided Brings rich flavor.
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose or bread flour, divided Creates soft texture.
  • Neutral oil or cooking spray For greasing.
  • Flaky sea salt For sprinkling.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small heatproof bowl, microwave the whole milk until warm to the touch.
  • Pour the milk into the bowl of a stand mixer, add the dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar, whisk together and let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the egg, kosher salt, 4 tablespoons of melted butter, and remaining sugar to the mixture, and beat on medium speed for 30 seconds.
  • Add 1 cup of flour, beating until smooth, then scrape down the sides and add the remaining flour, continuing to beat until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Knead the dough for about 3 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.

Baking

  • Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan and divide the dough into about 12 equal pieces, shaping them into balls.
  • Arrange them in the prepared pan, cover again and let rise until puffed, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake the rolls for 25 to 30 minutes, rotating halfway.
  • Brush with remaining melted butter and sprinkle with flaky sea salt before serving.

Notes

These rolls can be frozen for later enjoyment. They can also be made ahead of time and rise in the fridge overnight.
